Rail to Runway: challenging the narratives on India’s aviation growth
Challenging some narratives on Indian aviation's growth trajectory in this edition of Rail to Runway – Tracking India’s Aviation Ascent, a deep dive on India’s inevitable aviation boom.
Some of India's aviation majors have pitched a narrative, which broadly goes like:
1. India has entered the same GDP per capita band ($10–12k PPP) that triggered China’s aviation boom.
2. Therefore, India will follow a similar path: a domestic-led growth phase that will plateau as the market matures, followed by a boom in international traffic. (DIFFER)
This framing oversimplifies reality. India’s trajectory is structurally different. Domestic air travel will soar far beyond, as rising incomes shift millions from rail to air without HSR acting as a ceiling. It ignores how China’s high-speed rail fundamentally reshaped domestic travel, capping growth, and how China’s international boom came off a very low base.
Details:
India ≠ China’s trajectory. China’s domestic air traffic plateaued because HSR substituted, not because demand “matured”. India lacks HSR, so domestic air will keep compounding.
China: Domestic air boom (2000–2010) → HSR substitution → international boom (2010–2020).
India: Domestic air boom (GDP PPP parity) → no HSR → domestic will keep leading → international will grow too, but off a higher base (~30% today vs China’s 8% in 2010).
To conclude, there’s no denying the momentum on the international side, but India is starting from a higher base. However, with fewer than one in ten Indians holding a passport and a vast global diaspora, the international segment will keep expanding.
Yet, the bigger untapped lever remains domestic, where the rail-to-air shift is just beginning.
The Rail to Runway – Tracking India’s Aviation Ascent series is a deep dive on India’s inevitable aviation boom, through the lens of China’s aviation growth, exploring the comparative dynamics and the key divergences that could make India’s trajectory even more towering.
