This chart tells the central story of airline economics since 2015

This chart tells the central story of airline economics since 2015: an industry that generates real profit in dollar terms but consistently fails to cover its cost of capital.

The structural message embedded across all twelve years is consistent: airline is a high-revenue, low-margin, capital-intensive business that is acutely sensitive to fuel price shocks it cannot hedge away entirely. Demand resilience is not in question, 5.1 billion passengers at record load factors in 2026 confirms that. The question, as always, is whether the industry can convert traffic into returns that justify the capital deployed. On current trajectories, 2026 will be another year where the answer is no.
