Would you fancy flying non-stop to Macau? For folks in unserved markets
Would you fancy flying non-stop to Macau? For folks in unserved markets - this could soon be a reality.
Macau's flag carrier will soon lose its monopoly at the Macau International (MFM); Air Macau had exclusive rights to the slots at the airport and fended off competition since 1995, when the airline signed a 25-year contract with the government of the Special Administrative Region, agreeing to provide Macau with passenger, cargo, and mail services and in return obtained monopoly rights at the airport with a stipulation that no other scheduled carrier could establish a base there. Foreign carriers had to negotiate with Air Macau to access slots.
Air Asia in the past (Pre-COVID) expressed interest in establishing a base at MFM. Other carriers are also said to be in the fray (local and foreign).
Macau is directly connected only to proximate Asian countries as of now:
• China
• Taiwan
• South Korea
• Thailand
• Vietnam
• Japan
• Singapore
• Malaysia
• Cambodia
• Philippines
• Palau
QR has cargo ops to MFM.
This list is slated to grow exponentially as more connections are established with the casino hub. Good times ahead!
